Tek RMD

The Tek RMD is a modern substitute for the wheelchair, a kind of robot legs for handicapped people, that allows lower-body paralyzed people to mobilize like healthy people. Forget about old chairs with huge wheels – this device, that looks like a better segway, can significantly change the lives of handicapped and paralyzed people who will use it.

The base posture of this “wheelchair” is standing up – which means handicapped people could look the world from above – and could easily reach, amongst other things, to  high shelves around the house and in the supermarket  The standing posture also have a healthy beneficial advantage for the paralyzed – that needs to “stand” for an hour each day to maintain t heir body. while using this device, standing time is not a torture for them – but becomes an inseparable part of their everyday lives.

The way you “sit” in this device makes their users lives very easy: instead of throwing themselves into a wheelchair in reverse – a very complicated and dangerous maneuver - the Tek RMD allows them to pick themselves up towards the device. This means older or sick patients would no longer need the help of others to put themselves in it.

The Tek RMD, that was introduced a year ago, has a long way to go before , if at all, it becomes a device that can successfully replace the wheelchair. First of all – it is very expensive  cost around thousands of dollars. unlike regular wheelchairs, not all paralyzed could afford such a device, not to mention the insurance companies that will not hurry in approving it for them so fast.

There is also the matter of permits, regulations, medical opinions and more. Even the though that in the video it looks like a perfect solution – it will take some time to find out if it has major defects that could injure the people who use it.

On the other hand – This is a great example in a look to the future for mobility solutions. Wheelchairs may be efficient  but also very old fashioned, problematic and just doesn’t fit to what our society is designed for. Even of the Tek RMD would not become a standard of futuristic wheelchairs – Its pretty sure that the next generations of these devices will use the same ideas and technologies.
